Dedicated to the memory of Professor Fiona Denison

Fiona was Professor of Translational Obstetrics and Honorary Consultant Obstetrician at NHS Lothian. Fiona was so much part of our Edinburgh University community, having been an undergraduate and a postgraduate and for the last near 20 years, a leading clinical academic in the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health, and formerly the University Centre for Reproductive Biology.

Fiona touched many lives - as a caring clinician, an inspiring teacher and a passionate researcher. She was committed to translating research into clinical practice and her contributions have improved health outcomes for mothers and babies here in Scotland and beyond. Above all, she was a supportive colleague and friend. Her loss will be felt greatly by all who knew her.

This site is set up to allow her colleagues and collaborators, near and far, to pay tribute to and share memories of a wonderful gifted researcher, doctor, teacher and friend.

Dr Denison was my consultant with both my sons. After F’s traumatic birth she met me after for a debrief and said “I think I’ll see you again..” At that point I said pretty clearly “only if it’s in Tesco!” Yet 4 years later there I was.. back in her clinic and pregnant with L. She remembered F and I. She was extremely caring and compassionate and I felt as safe as I could at one of the most vulnerable points in my life. Near the end of my pregnancy I had an unplanned admission which I found really distressing. She called the ward whilst on annual leave and talked me through everything and made a plan to carry out my c-section herself on her first day back. She didn’t need to in the end..L came the day before.. but she still called me on the labour ward to congratulate me. She was genuinely amazing and worked tirelessly on improving the outcomes for Mums and babies. I can’t imagine the loss felt by her family, friends and colleagues.

Fiona was one of my consultants during my time as an O&G trainee in Edinburgh. She was always so very kind, fun, and supportive, even amidst the chaos of clinical life. Despite her hugely impressive achievements, she was also so down to earth and approachable. I will always be grateful for the empathy and honesty she extended to me when I was trying to find the right path in medicine. A real role model with so many characteristics to aspire towards. I hope her family and friends find comfort in reading through all of the lovely comments and take pride in the huge and far-reaching impact that both her personality and work have had on the obstetric world.
