Her light still shines in the darkness

Never did I imagine I would be contributing something of this nature to Fiona's life story.  I have felt huge sadness since learning of the tragedy of her death.  I simply wish to express my heartfelt sympathy, along with others, to Fiona's family, in the hope that they may draw comfort from the warmth of love and respect the sharing of these memories stirs.

My thoughts align with those of Patricia Cantley and Duncan MacLaren, both of whom have recalled Fiona's participation in the music group or band, who kindly gathered in The Sanctuary of the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh each Christmas for the Staff Carols event.  As the person who was latterly responsible for ensuring it happened, prior to my retirement from chaplaincy in 2018, I shall always remember Fiona's bubbly enthusiasm and her annual reminder, as soon as it was over, not to forget to include her next time!  She was also meticulous in preparation, insistent that I ensure I sent the correct music copy (either first or second flute part), depending on which she or Patricia would be playing.  Ask her to play solo and she never disappointed; those who knew Fiona well would be of one mind, in recalling her generous spirit, her spontaneous thoughtfulness and innate kindness.

I was also privileged to meet her professionally, usually around Labour Ward.  No matter how busy, she would always say 'hello', acknowledging the value of spiritual and pastoral care in the context of baby loss and embodying the appreciation of the team there for that contribution to patient care.

Thank you to all who have posted such lovely memories and photographs of a truly gifted doctor, compassionate human being, our much loved and respected colleague and friend; thus ensuring the light Fiona brought into our lives, caught in the sparkle of her eyes and the kindness of her smile, still shines through the mistiness of these days now bereft of her vibrant presence.  What a tragic end to a life well lived and with so much still to give.
